This past weekend saw Montana 'cross racers converge on Ryan's Field in Helena, a new 'cross venue. The race was put on by Great Divide, who set up an outstanding course. The course was long and mostly flat and featured lots of energy sucking grass that forced racers to keep the power on with little recovery. There were also lots of fun 180 turns, two short run-ups, some tricky sand, and a super fast double barrier section.
The first race of the day was the Men's Cat 4, Master B, and Women. Representing GAS/Intrinsik were Jason Delmue (Cat 4), Jim Nallick (Masters B), and Lisa Curry (Women's Cat 3). Cory Hardy of team Muleterro took the hole shot and led the first part of lap 1. Jason Delmue pulled to the front near the end of the lap and quickly took control.

Alex, Lisa, and I were well-rested and pancake-fueled Sunday morning after our stay with Aaron Johnson and his wife Jess in Big Fork. Thanks again guys! Day two of the Flathead cyclocross weekend took place at Herron Park just outside of Kalispell. The course was centered on a scenic meadow surrounded by rolling hills complete with Tamaracks in golden fall colors. It was a clear and frosty morning and most racers seemed a bit sluggish to gear up and get moving. While Lisa and Alex checked out the course, I consumed some important pre-race caffeine. The course was the longest loop so far this season. It criss-crossed the meadow and featured a short paved climb, short run-up, some fast grassy corners, double barrier section, a bit of forest singletrack, lots of bumpy sections, and a short loose climb that was challenging to ride. Overall it was a fast course that would likely reward power over technical abilities.

John and Alex go 1-2!
Photos by Natasha Westphal We were all happy to see a good turnout for the Woodland ‘Cross in Kalispell this past Saturday. The men-123 and master-A field was over 20 deep and the weather was perfect. A section of tight slalom turns through the trees kept the pace reasonable for at least the first half of lap 1, which was led by Frank Gonzalez (MT Velo). I was greatful for Frank’s humane pace but it didn’t take long for John Curry to grow impatient, crank it up a notch, and take control of the race. Bob Presta (montanacyclocross.com), Geoff Proctor (MT Velo), and I did our best to stay with him but he quickly established a gap and rode away. After a few exhausting laps with Bob and Geoff on my tail they finally came around me and I was glad to sit in their draft while they chased my teammate down. At some point, Geoff had a small bobble in the trees and dropped back 5 or 10 seconds, riding with Frank, who eventually had a flat tire which took him out of contention. Geoff clawed his way back up to Bob and I. We were once again in a three way battle for second place.
