On Sunday Jan 31st was the Homestake Lodge winter triathlon. For many, apparently, it was hellish. For me, it was like they invented this silly sport just to make me happy. The conditions were soft, which made for almost comical running and biking. The only discipline that was true to it's traditional values was the skate skiing. If it had been hard pack, it would have been a different story. The runners would have kicked my butt as they usually do and John Curry would have punished me on the bike like he always does. Wallowing in the deep snow played havoc on many people's psyche and that was probably the single most important factor in the outcome of this race. Even though some complained, everybody was smiling when it was all said and done. I think deep down we all had fun.
